The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has commended the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election following the polls held on January 15, 2026.

In a statement, Youssouf said the elections were conducted in a manner that reflected Uganda’s commitment to democratic processes.

He congratulated Museveni on securing 71.61 per cent of the votes cast, a result that extended the veteran leader’s tenure in office.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. The AU Commission Chair also paid tribute to the leadership of the election observation mission deployed to Uganda, noting the role it played in assessing the electoral process.

He expressed sincere appreciation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who led the Joint African Union/Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)/Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission.

Youssouf praised Jonathan’s stewardship of the mission, describing it as instrumental in providing an independent assessment of the electoral exercise.

He cited Jonathan’s leadership in coordinating the joint observer teams drawn from the three regional and continental bodies.

The African Union Commission Chair further reiterated the AU’s broader commitment to supporting democratic governance across the continent.

He said the Commission would continue to work with member states to promote democracy, effective governance, and respect for constitutional order.

“The Chairperson further reiterates the commitment of the African Union Commission to continue to support the promotion of democracy and effective governance in the continent,” the statement said.

Youssouf also applauded Ugandan citizens for their participation in the electoral process, saying their engagement demonstrated dedication to strengthening democratic institutions.

He commended the people of Uganda for their role in advancing “democratic gains, peace, security, and development.”

The endorsement from the African Union comes as Uganda concludes its electoral cycle and moves forward with the formation of a new administration.

The AU said it remains engaged with Ugandan authorities and regional partners as part of its mandate to support stability and democratic consolidation in member states.
